Resolution Affirming University Values, Fall 2025

WHEREAS as the fall semester of 2025 begins, the University of Virginia faces unprecedented challenges; and

WHEREAS in a time of leadership transition, the University faces an ongoing compliance review and high-stakes negotiations between the Department of Justice, the Board of Visitors, and the University administration regarding a Voluntary Resolution Agreement (VRA) that may determine the future of the University; and

WHEREAS there is significant uncertainty within the faculty and staff about how to proceed in the current context; now, therefore, be it 

RESOLVED that we collectively affirm that we are governed by existing policy, including the academic freedom guidelines as expressed in the UVA Faculty Handbook, section 3.1, which contains the University endorsed statement on Academic Freedom within the 1940 Statement of Principles of the American Association of University Professors; and be it further

RESOLVED that we dedicate ourselves to the University of Virginia Mission Statement:

The University of Virginia is a public institution of higher learning guided by a founding vision of discovery, innovation, and development of the full potential of talented students from all walks of life. It serves the Commonwealth of Virginia, the nation, and the world by developing responsible citizen leaders and professionals; advancing, preserving, and disseminating knowledge; and providing world-class patient care.

We are defined by:

• Our enduring commitment to a vibrant and unique residential learning environment marked by the free and collegial exchange of ideas;
• Our unwavering support of a collaborative, diverse community bound together by distinctive foundational values of honor, integrity, trust, and respect;
• Our universal dedication to excellence and affordable access.

RESOLVED that the University’s policies and mission remain in effect, and be it further

RESOLVED that the Faculty Senate will uphold these policies and this mission as we continue to provide world class teaching, research, service, and medical care to the Commonwealth of Virginia, our nation, and the world.

This resolution was passed by the UVA Faculty Senate EXCO on 08/22/2025 by the following vote, and needs confirmation by the full senate at the next meeting.
