Resolution on the Signing of the Agreement with the US Department of Justice

WHEREAS the Faculty delivers the mission of UVA by creating knowledge through research and scholarship, disseminating this knowledge through teaching and publication, and helping the world use this knowledge to be better; and

WHEREAS on Wednesday, October 22nd Interim President Paul Mahoney signed the “Agreement Between the United States of America and the Rector and Visitors of the University of Virginia” with the US Department of Justice; and

WHEREAS the University of Virginia Faculty Senate has grave concerns regarding the content of the agreement, its ambiguity, and to what it binds the university and its future president; and

WHEREAS in response to our June 27th resolution, and at the July 9th Executive Council and July 11th Faculty Senate meetings, the Rector committed to sharing information regarding President Ryan’s forced resignation “once an agreement was made [with the Department of Justice]”; therefore

BE IT RESOLVED that the Faculty Senate calls on the Rector of the Board of Visitors and the Interim President to meet with the Faculty Senate by no later than the next faculty senate meeting on November 14th, 2025 to clarify the circumstances and negotiations that led to the signing of this Agreement, and what the Agreement will require of the University.
